Arm strip athletes wear?

I have noticing for a while that some athletes wear some kind of a strip on the back or the arm. What is this called and what are the benefits of wearing it? Its mostly pink or flesh colored. Anyone who has been watching the badminton matches in CWG 2010, Jwala Gutta often wears one on her arm.
