How can you say the civil war was about slavery?

If you read letters from soldiers to their homes, slavery almost is never mentioned, they talk about a hate for the federal government and a hatred of yanks. Could the average Confederate Soldier fought the war for those reasons and not slavery? Is it possible that the war was fought for many reasons and slavery just makes the north look most noble?
